A new scam circulating in Southern Arizona is targeting Medicare and Social Security numbers, according to the Better Business Bureau of Southern Arizona.

Susann Miller with the BBB says scammers are calling and emailing people asking to confirm their personal information so they can send a new Medicare card.

Scammers will state there is a charge for your new card and will threaten to cancel health benefits if they don't get the requested information.

Some tips to protect yourself:

  • Someone from Medicare will never contact you for your Medicare number or personal information.
  • New Medicare cards are being sent out starting April 2018 and you don't need to take any action to receive the new card.
  • Call Medicare if you think the call may be a scam. Call Medicare directly at 800-633-4227.
