The Tucson Unified School District's boardappointed Dr. Gabriel Trujillo as interim superintendent Tuesday night with a 5 to 0 vote.

Trujillo says his goals are to hire more teachers and finalize and submit a budget to the governing board.

"I think one of the biggest things to improve upon is really what any district our size should want to improve, exceptional customer service," Trujillo said. "I think that is extremely important that our community feels like they have a place they can come and be listened to."

He says he will hold a series of employee and community forums to listen to teacher and parent concerns about the district.

Trujillo's contract is up June 30th and there is an option to extend.

However, he explained he hasn't given much thought as to becoming the permanent superintendent other than submitting his name as a candidate.

Before his new role, Trujillo spent almost a year as the district's assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction.
