Pedestrian killed after being struck by train

An adult male was killed after being struck by a train near downtown Tucson.

The intersection of North 7th Avenue and East Toole Avenue was shut down Friday afternoon because of the collision.

The collision happened just after 4 p.m. Tucson Police say the man who was hit was in his 40's. 

Tucson Fire was on scene when officers arrived. The man was pronounced dead on scene. 

Witnesses told investigators that the railroad crossing arms were down as the train was approaching. The man who was killed was seen standing in the roadway crossing of North 7th Avenue and the railroad tracks. The man was inside the downed crossing arms and stepped out in front of the oncoming train. 

The engineer and conductor of the oncoming train immediately began using the emergency braking system but the man was struck before the train could stop.
