The first day of school is just around the corner. Tucson's La Paloma Academy Lakeside Principal Sean Watins says parents should start easing kids back into school mode before the end of summer.

  1. Meet the teacher: One thing you always here when a kid is going back to school is, " Will I like my teacher?" The best way to calm nerves is to have prior knowledge so that you stay ahead of the little questions.
  2. Get ahead, Stay ahead
  3. 5 P's: Prior Planning Prevents Poor Performance
  4. Communication is King: There is nothing more essential then being on the same accord with everyone in your household that way everyone knows the plans.
He also says kids should starting putting down the tech and being social, in person, as well as going to bed and waking up earlier.

"They'll be sleeping late, wake up, lay on the couch for five hours, play videogames, take a nap and eat a bowl of cereal, and you come to school expected to be in a chair for seven hours with a little bit of recess here and there," Watins says. "It's not conducive to any type of learning or structure."

He says doing these things can help keep kids' anxiety and behavioral issues to a minimum the first couple weeks of school.
