How Genomic Testing Changes the Way Doctors Look at Cancer

Cancer Awareness Months are important, and this time of year, we call attention to a variety of cancers - including breast, thyroid and lung. As cancer care evolves and advances, researchers can now better treat cancer based on the genomic changes in a tumor, rather than where it originates in the body. That’s why we should commemorate patients with all types of cancer this season.

TRK fusion cancer can occur accross a broad range of tumor types and affects patients regardless of their age. This cancer is caused by a genomic alteration known as a NTRKgene fusion, which is an oncogenic driver for the spread and growth of a tumor. There are certain tests, known as genomic testing, that can determine if a patient’s tumor has aNTRK gene fusion.

It’s essential that all patients with solid tumors undergo genomic testing to find out what is driving their tumor growth. These tests are a big step forward in cancer care, and these advances give doctors a better understanding of each individual’s cancer diagnosis.
