The key recommendations are:

a) Regular laundry practices, combined with the use of a deeper-cleaning, high-quality detergent, along with washing your hands after handling soiled laundry is enough to reduce the spread of viruses that cause COVID-19, the flu and colds.

b) However, in households with suspected respiratory infections including COVID-19, special precautions should be taken when handling contaminated clothes as per CDC guidelines.

c) The use of laundry sanitizers or a disinfecting laundry detergent is not needed in most cases but can be used in specific situations such as households with stomach bugs, weakened immune systems, or contaminated work clothes. The laundry sanitizers should be used in combination with deeper cleaning detergents to remove deeply embedded soils that can interfere with the action of the sanitizer and should not be used for everyday cleaning.
