TUCSON, Ariz. - A Golden Eagle is clinging to life after being poisoned by lead bullets.

Staff at the Tucson Wildlife Center say a hunter in the Arivaca area came upon the animal Thursday. That hunter brought the bird to the center, where a veterinarian immediately began life-saving treatment.

The bird remains in critical condition, but has been responsive.

Staff at the Wildlife Center say the majority of the birds they rescue have this kind of poisoning. In Arizona, it is legal for hunters to use bullets that contain lead. Often times, these birds of prey accidentally ingest the material and get sick.
