Could Arizonans be forced to get vaccines?

New York City is making a rare and controversial move to stop the spread of the measles. The city, now requiring people living in certain zip codes to get a vaccine or face a $1,000 fine.

We asked a Valley attorney if it's possible for that to happen here in Arizona? The short answer, it could be tough for a citizen to fight.

"It's the same reason that you're not allowed to walk around with a backpack full of dynamite, because you like dynamite," said James Arrowood with Arrowood Helbert in Scottsdale.

"Perhaps you have a religious affiliation with dynamite. But, if I am a government/police power organization, I'm going to say your personal right to carry a backpack full of dynamite into a kindergarten does not trump the right of all those children to be safe from an unstable substance."

There's only one confirmed case of the measles here in Arizona. That case is in Pima County.

In the Big Apple, there's been 285 cases since fall 2018.
