TUCSON, Ariz. - The Tucson Unified School Board is tackling its troubled schools.
The district listed five schools with "F" letter grades:
- Booth-Fickett K-8
- Catalina High School
- Magee Middle School
- Lawrence 3-8
- Safford K-8
The board heard from district leadership in its meeting Tuesday night, on specific strategies, systems and support to improve the struggling schools, so they're not facing the same situation the following year.
The plan revealed a lot of math and reading interventions, and fixing each school's culture and climate.
The board also discussed what resources are needed.
"We want to know not just the end of the school year, not the school grade next year, what's happening every step of the way," said TUSD Board President Kristel Foster.
"Some schools had a high turnover in staff - so when you start the school year with 10 vacancies and long term subs, it's hard to try to build up a culture," said TUSD Board Member Adelita Grijalva.
Grijalva asked the district to provide the board with continuous data on all its schools, especially concerning high teacher turnover and low student enrollment.
