TUCSON, Ariz. — In light of recent mass shootings in Texas, California and Ohio, active shooter trainings have been taking place across the country.
However, even though running and hiding can be a good approach, what if there was another way?
A Tucson martial training institute called KoSho is doing hands on training for personal protection in any life-threatening situation someone may come across.
"Personal protection has the expectation that your attacker is going to be armed, so you should there for similarly be armed, but it doesn't have to be with a fire arm or conventional weapons," Instructor of the class John Viol said.
He said you can use anything from a cell phone to a water bottle. For this training to help protect people, he said it has to be reality based.
"The weakest link in the protection chain is the general public and because of that, that's who is being preyed on the most. That's where these active shooters go," Viol said. "We have to strengthen the weakest link because they don't always have access to third party people protecting them."
Viol said this is the same training professionals like people in the military and secret service use around the world, but now everyone can learn it.
The next free classes are at KoSho Martial Training Institute (151 W Orange Grove Rd., Tucson, AZ 85704) are Thursday August 22nd at 6:00 p.m. and Saturday August 24th at 1 p.m.
