TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - The Tucson Police Department is investigating an early morning shooting near interstate 10 involving a trooper from the Department of Public Safety.

Sergeant Kimberly Bay with Tucson Police says a DPS trooper fired at least one shot at a vehicle near Commerce and the I-10 Frontage Rd.

Sgt. Bay said one DPS sergeant and two troopers responded to the area just after 1:00a.m. Sunday to reports of street racing.

The troopers found a large group gathered, believed to be engaged in street racing. As they began to clear the crowd from the area, one trooper set up his vehicle at the Frontage Rd. and Commerce.

The trooper was reportedly outside of his vehicle when a car began driving towards him. The trooper then directed the driver to stop, but they continued. That is when the trooper shot at the vehicle. The driver fled the scene.

Around 2:00a.m. the vehicle was located near East Speedway and North Stone and the people inside were arrested by Tucson Police officers.

The trooper who was involved was taken to the hospital for minor injuries. No other injuries were reported.

The Tucson Police Department is conducting a criminal investigation because the incident happened within city limits. DPS is conducting a separate, administrative investigating into the trooper's actions.
