SpaceX has been granted permission by the Federal Communications Commission to launch Internet satellites into space in hopes of creating faster, cheaper Internet access.
According to a report from the Washington Post, the plan is to have a network of 12,000 satellites "blanket" the earth in Internet access.

“I’m excited to see what these services might promise and what these proposed constellations have to offer,” said FCC Chairman Ajit Pai told the Washington Post. “Our approach to these applications reflects this commission’s fundamental approach to encourage the private sector to invest and to innovate and allow market forces to deliver value to American consumers.”
SpaceX says this endeavor will take more than six years to complete.
SpaceX was founded in 2002 with the goal of revolutionizing space technology.
