PHOENIX (AP) - The Senate approved a bill in what has become an annual effort to allow concealed-carry permits holders to carry firearms into some public buildings.
Sen. John Kavanagh sponsored the proposal allowing concealed-carry permit holders to take their weapons into some public buildings excluding court rooms, federal buildings, high schools and universities.
It would require operators of public establishments such as libraries and city halls to allow permit-holders to carry their firearms or establish security guards and metal detectors at the facility.
Kavanagh says the measure gives municipalities a choice to allow concealed carry firearms or tighten security.
Sen. Steve Farley said it would cost rural counties nearly $12 million to install security.
Senate Bill 1257 received approval on an 18-12 vote Thursday afternoon. It now moves to the House.
