Army Chief of Staff General Mark Milley presented Senator McCain with the Outstanding Civilian Service Medal.
While receiving his honor McCain had words of advice for those hoping to follow in his footsteps as a war hero.
The Outstanding Civilian Service Medal is the highest Army honor for a civilian.
McCain has served as the Chairman of the Senate Armed services committee since 2014.
