Santa Cruz Valley Regional Hospital volunteer starts program to help ER patients

TUCSON, Ariz. - A volunteer at the Santa Cruz Valley Regional Hospital has started a program that will help make ER patients at the hospital more comfortable.

Along with being a hospital volunteer, Lynne Severe has also been a nurse for 52 years.

She decided to start the program weeks ago after realizing she wanted to do something to help ER patients.

"I recognized that when patients come into the emergency room they're scared. They don't know what's going to happen to them, they don't know what's going on inside them," said Severe.

The program will require volunteers to sit inside of the emergency room and wait for a patient to come in. Once someone checks in, that's when volunteers will sit down with the patient and offering them anything they need.

Volunteers will be able to give patients water, blankets, even answer some basic questions about the process.

"We're focusing on this area because the emergency room is one of the faces of this hospital and it's the place of the patients greatest need," said Severe.

The program is set to start on Friday, March 1.

Despite kicking-off this week, Severe said the program could still use some volunteers.
