During the 3rd annual event, Rep. Martha McSally distinguished several veterans who were nominated by their peers as making a difference in the community.

The winner of the 2017 award went to Stuart Carter, an Air Force veteran who continues to work with his fellow veterans in Sierra Vista.

Carter is the founder of Velo-Vets, an organization that helps handicapped veterans build self-esteem and fitness by riding bikes. Carter designs the bikes so those who can't ride a traditional one are now able to run for miles.

"From what I can tell if you're nominated, you've done some great things and I think all 20 nominees deserve to be recognized."
