Google spinoff Waymo and Phoenix's major transit agency are partnering to test self-driving vehicles that would also boost public transportation use.

Waymo announced in a blog post the start of a pilot program Tuesday that would allow riders to hail an autonomous car to the nearest Valley Metro transit stop.

Riders would use the Waymo app to order a vehicle.

Valley Metro employees will be the first to try out the technology.

Waymo officials say the operation is designed to bridge the gap for travelers who may have difficulty getting to a bus or light rail line.

The initiative comes five months after a self-driving Uber car fatally hit an Arizona woman, leading the rideshare service to pull all its autonomous cars out of the state.
