Oro Valley Police enforce "hands-free" driving ordinance

Oro Valley's new "hands-free" driving ordinance began Friday.

The new town ordinance prohibits drivers from holding their phone, even when stopped at a light or stop sign.

"You will be able to see the driver, where their hand placement is, where their attention is focused, if their eyes are down from the roadway and away from the task of driving," said Sergeant Matthew Horetski from Oro Valley Police Department.

If you must answer your phone, Horetski says to use Bluetooth, a phone mount, or turn on the phone's speaker.

The only time a driver can have a phone in their hand is during an emergency or calling a doctor.

Police say during the first few months they will be pulling drivers over and handing out educational pamphlets.

After that, drivers can receive up to a $250 ticket.
