TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Mall parking lots and apartment complexes top the list of targets for car thieves. The numbers from 2012 show where the most cars are being stolen from and which cars are the biggest targets.
There were more than 2,300 vehicle thefts or break-ins in Tucson over the past year, according to the Tucson Police Department. Most of them are concentrated near the southside, midtown, or right off I-10.
The top locations for car thefts include:
1. Casa Bella Apartments, 175 W Valencia Rd. (23 thefts)
2. Rancho del Mar Apartments, 6200 S Campbell Ave. (20 thefts)
3. Rio Seco Apartments, 1440 W Irvington Rd. (13 thefts)
4. Park Place Mall, 5870 E Broadway Blvd. (13 thefts)
5. Tucson Mall, 4500 N Oracle (12 thefts)
The top five most commonly stolen vehicles are:
1. Honda Accord (197 cars stolen)
2. Honda Civic (174 cars stolen)
3. Chevrolet Silverado (104 cars stolen)
4. Nissan Sentra (90 cars stolen)
5. Nissan Altima (71 cars stolen)
If you want to take an extra step to protect your car, you can sign up for TPD's free "Watch Your Car program" You'll get a decal for your car that signals to police that you usually do not drive between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. So if police spot the car driving during those hours, they can immediately pull the car over to see if it has been stolen.
The most important thing police ask you do when you know your car has been stolen is call 911. TPD says they do recover about 70% of cars reported stolen.
