TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Gasoline prices are the lowest they have been in eight years. But did you know you can push the price even lower, sometimes even a dollar less per gallon?
Prices at the pump may be plummeting, but there are simple ways to save even more.
"If you can save 50 cents a gallon it doesn't matter what the price is, you're still saving 50 cents a gallon."
Fifty cents a gallon is exactly what Peter Draine saved spending just over one dollar for each gallon of gas.
All from simply doing his grocery shopping at Fry's.
Some people saving 10 cents, 20 cents, all the way up to a dollar off.
"Oh, it adds up. It adds up. It's like free money."
Draine says he rarely pays full price for gas since he always has fuel points.
Judy and Dave Swanson rack up those points with more than just groceries. It is also from purchasing prescriptions and gift cards.
Prescriptions at Fry's are 50 points a piece, no matter the price of the medicine.
At Safeway, you get one point for each dollar spent at the pharmacy.
Gift cards bought at either stores offers two times the fuel reward points year-round, sometimes up to four times the points.
"For sending gifts and giving gifts...and then you kind of get a gift for yourself as well."
Some people, like Mary Ann Creel, buy gift cards not as gifts. They buy they gift cards for anything they'll be spending money on, just to get those points.
"You're going to be spending might as well get your double fuel points."
When you do that spending, your receipt offers a survey once a week for another 50 fuel reward points.
With all of that, gas for under a dollar is no longer a distant dream.
Fry's points can be used at participating Shell and Circle K gas stations. Safeway points can be used at participating Chevron and Texaco locations.
