TUCSON, Ariz. (AP) - A University of Arizona economist says the state's economy is performing well and that the outlook calls for continued expansion in the near term, although more slowly than the "torrid pace" set recently.

An article by George W. Hammond, director of the Economic and Business Research Center of the Eller College of Management, says Arizona's current economic performance remains very strong despite building concerns about the future.

Hammond's article says risks of recession are low this year but that 2020 "is another story altogether."

According to Hammond, the national slowdown is driven by dissipation of the federal fiscal stimulus, lagged impacts of interest rate increases, uncertainty about the resolution of trade disputes and decelerating global economic performance.
