If you need a safe ride home this 4th of July weekend, our local law enforcement officers are helping out. For the first time, the Southern Arizona DUI Task Force is offering discounted Uber rides to deter drunk driving.
In a new partnership with Uber, you can use promo codes that are good for up to $35 off three rides.
"We're doing everything on our part in the law enforcement end and the community end with Uber partnering with us, so we're hoping everyone will take the extra effort to utilize the service," said sergeant Terry O'Hara with Tucson Police.
During holiday weekends task force officials increase their presence here in Pima county.
in the city of Tucson, we've had a significant number of traffic fatalities this year. Year-to-date we're slightly ahead of where we were last year unfortunately," said O'Hara.
Over 4th of July weekend in 2015, the task force conducted more than 1,100 traffic stops.
-74 of those resulted in DUI's
-6 of which involved drivers under the age of 21.
-10 DUI's that involved vehicular aggravated assault.
Even with the promo codes some people don't think it will make a difference.
"People are gonna be drunk, they're gonna be out partying they're gonna be having fun they're gonna be going places. Not, 'Oh you know, let's take out time and punch in the code for Uber,"' said Louis Adams.
"I think it will discourage some drinking and driving but I think there will always be people that will take their own car and think that they're not going to drink and end up doing so," said Carolina Colantuoni.
The codes are valid in most of Pima County.
New users can get $15 off their first ride using the promo code NODUITUCSON.
New and existing users can get $10 off two separate rides using promo code SAFE4THTUS.
The codes are valid from 5 p.m. July 1st through 4 a.m. July 5th.
