Former Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was honored for her work in Congress on Wednesday.
The Democratic cloakroom at the U.S. Capitol was renamed in honor of her, as well as former California Congressman Leo Ryan, who was assassinated in 1978.
Giffords released a statement about the ceremony, saying in part:
"While my time in Congress has come to an end, I will never stop serving the American people. In fact, I believe it's never been more important for us all to stand up for our values and speak up about our beliefs. It's when we join together that we have the strength to solve big problems and shape the direction of our country. I’m proud to be with my colleagues here today and hope the conversations that happen in the cloakroom moving forward inspire action that will build a brighter and safer future for all Americans."
