Criminal justice town hall meetings across Arizona

The Arizona Department of Corrections is hosting several community town halls to talk about the best way to create and maintain safe, productive communities.

The first was held Thursday, September 13th. Kevin Wright, a criminal justice professor from Arizona State University spoke about the importance of considering the cause of a crime when thinking about what the punishment for that crime should be.

Wright said typically people say those who committed a crime, had a choice. But he said that leaves out several other reasons that lead people to commit criminal behavior, such as victimization, trauma, abuse, bad parenting, bad peers, poverty, lack of educational opportunities, and lack of job opportunities.

The conversation will continue at upcoming town halls:

  • September 14, 8 a.m. to 1 p.m.

  • September 28, 8 a.m. to 1.p.m.

    • $25 registration fee (includes lunch)
  • October 4, 5 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.
    • Cochise College Sierra Vista campus student union building, community room A, 901 N. Colombo Ave., Sierra Vista, AZ
    • Attendance is free
  • October 13, 8 a.m. to 2 p.m.
    • Habitat for Humanity Tucson, 3501 N. Mountain Ave., Tucson, AZ
    • Attendance is free
