VAIL, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - The celebration of the construction for the Colossal Cave Road Project took place early morning today, June 6.

According to a Pima County media release, Pima County’s Department of Transportation, Regional Transportation Authority, Vail School District, and Southern Arizona Paving will host the event. District 5 Supervisor Richard Elias, District 2 Supervisor Ray Carroll, and Superintendent Calvin Baker were among the guest speakers at the event.

The improvement project aims to benefit the community as a whole in hopes of enhancing traffic safety by reconstructing about 4,600 feet of Colossal Road. Augmented right turn lanes, concrete sidewalks, and paved bike shoulders are some of the features enhancing the new project. Local youth art will be displayed at the Acacia Elementary crosswalk.

Although pre-construction initiated on May 31 and traffic control has been installed, inclement weather or mechanical failure may change the schedule.

The project is set to be completed by winter 2017.
