A broken gas line jolted some residents in a west Phoenix neighborhood when a section of the street suddenly caved in.

The Phoenix Fire Department says 911 callers on Tuesday afternoon reported "bubbling asphalt."

Hazardous material crews found an area of asphalt measuring 10 feet by 10 feet (3 by 3 meters) had come apart. They say a broken water line and gas line were the causes.

After detecting high levels of natural gas, fire officials temporarily evacuated three people and two dogs from one home.

They have since been allowed back in.
