U.S. Border Patrol agents say three hikers were rescued from a southern Arizona mountain range.

The agency's Tucson Sector says the rescue of the three men, all U.S. citizens, happened Wednesday at dawn.

The trio had been hiking in the Baboquivari Mountains east of Sells on Tuesday evening when they got lost.

They were able to dial 911 and agents found two of them.

Authorities say the third man was unable to hike down from a mountain top. A rescue team reached the 66-year-old and stayed with him until a helicopter could attempt an extraction at first light.

He was transported off the mountain and treated at a hospital.

Border Patrol officials say anyone out in the desert who becomes distressed should call 911 or activate a rescue beacon.
