BENSON, Ariz (KGUN9-TV) - A Benson Unified School District employee is under investigation after she brought a handgun to campus and gave it to a group of students, according to Benson Police.

Benson Police Chief Paul Moncada said the employee, who works with the transportation section of Benson Unified, handed a group of two to three students a gun that was hidden in a jacket on Friday after school in the parking lot.

Moncada said the group of students were then suppose to give the gun to it's owner.

Both the employee and the students involved admitted to officials that there was a weapon hidden inside the coat, said Moncada. Officials have not yet recovered the weapon.

BUSD Superintendent Micah Mortensen said the employee has been working with the district for about a year now.  He said a board meeting will take place next week and the Governing Board will decide what will happen with the employee.

"The plan was just to return the gun to somebody, unfortunately she made a poor judgment call by getting students involved and bringing it to school," said Mortensen.

The Superintendent said the students involved will receive appropriate disciplinary action.

Sheriff Moncada said the case will be forwarded to the Cochise County Attorney's Office.
