A long series of events led to at least two carjackings, a high speed chase and an officer involved shooting throughout the city of Tucson. In their pursuit to catch a suspected bank robber Marana police patrolled the southwest side of town.
During their surveillance they found the suspect in a car near I-10 and Mission Road. Police say the suspect drove that car into an unmarked Marana police car. That's when the chase began. Police followed the suspect to I-19 and Ajo Way.
"At that time the suspect crashed his car into the median of the interstate," said Lieutenant Tim Brunenkant. "Our officers took cover and there was an exchange of gunfire."
With officers out of their vehicle, the armed suspect would make a getaway.
"The suspect then carjacked our marked patrol vehicle, continued south on I-19 got off at Valencia."
The suspect drove the Marana patrol car to a medical plaza on Valencia. With a gun in hand, he ditched the cop car and took on another victim.
"He was an adult male he was elderly, he was here for an appointment and that suspect had exited the patrol vehicle that he carjacked and walked up. There was obviously a confrontation where he was able to take control of his vehicle and then carjack that one."
After stealing that second vehicle he would take off again.Marana police are working in conjunction with Tucson police and the sheriff's department as they investigate.
