Many Christians around the world begin Lent observances Wednesday.
Ash Wednesday launches the 40-day Lent period that typically lasts until midnight on Easter Sunday. During that time, believers will give up something, such as their favorite food or pleasurable activities, or do something beneficial to the community. The gesture of fasting is a symbolic gesture to honor the Biblical passage where, for 40 days and nights, Jesus Christ went without food and water in the desert, despite being tempted by the devil.
In addition to masses and church services, some parishes are offering "Ashes to Go".
