PHOENIX — Superintendent Katie Hoffman delivered her first State of Education address to the Arizona House of Representatives Monday.
Hoffman's speech laid out a new vision for education in the state. In her speech, she called on lawmakers to step up oversight of the state's charter schools, pass legislation aimed at decreasing the widening counselor-student ratio and help English-language-learner (ELL) students.
Hoffman also focused heavily on the teacher shortage question, calling on lawmakers for more funding to increase teacher pay and benefits to boost recruitment. She said Gov. Ducey's "20-by-2020" plan, which would increase teacher pay by 20 percent by the year 2020, was a good start, but could go further.
