The Arizona State Board of Education has voted to adopt new history and social science standards.

The board voted Monday to adopt the standards, which include edits recommended by the Arizona Science Teachers Association after an outcry over how the draft standards addressed evolution. Those edits emphasize that "The unity and diversity of organisms, living and extinct, is the result of evolution."

The revised standards will be used by K-12 public district and charter schools statewide.

The revisions will be fully implemented by the 2019-2020 school year.

Standards outline what a student should know by the end of each school year.

The last time the state updated the history and social studies standards was in 2005. The science standards were last updated in 2004.
