Democrats in the Arizona state legislature are continuing to push for ways to address gun violence in the wake of the latest school shooting in Texas.
They wrote to Republican leaders Tuesday to suggest calling a special session on gun violence and school safety. Such a move requires two-thirds support from both the House and Senate.
Speaker of the House J.D. Mesnard said school safety is a paramount issue. But he's concerned that a special session could wind up in a stalemate.
Democrats last week urged Gov. Doug Ducey to call a special session. He's put forward his own plan to increase mental and behavioral health resources for schools. It would also create a new way to petition courts to prevent a dangerous individual from accessing guns.
