PHOENIX, Ariz. - ADOT is helping to ensure highways are a little cleaner with the the use of three numbers.

Drivers who witness littering on the highway are now able to call the number 511, which will direct them to the Traveler Information Line.

There, they can follow the prompts to inform ADOT of the violation and the car connected with it.

Callers will need to give the plate number, location, time of day that the offense occurred, and what type of litter it was.

With this information, the owner registered to that car will receive a letter from ADOT to remind them that littering is against the law and can be punishable with a $500 fine.

A small litterbag is also given to encourage folks to help keep Arizona highways clean. More than 1,300 of these letters were given by ADOT last year.

To report littering drivers can go online at Litter.AZ.gov [litter.az.gov] or call 877-3LITTER (877) 354-8837.
