A man charged with first-degree murder and aggravated assault for the 2015 shootings that left one Northern Arizona University student dead and three others wounded has testified in his own defense.
Steven Jones told the court Thursday afternoon that he was punched in the face by some intoxicated people near the university's Flagstaff campus on that October night and lost his glasses.
Jones says he was chased from the scene and went to get his gun out of his car because he panicked and feared for his safety.
He says he didn't want to abandon his friends and went back to help them and remembers firing some shots in the air but didn't mean to hurt anyone.
Jones has pleaded not guilty and claims he fired in self-defense.
Two of the shooting victims testified against the defendant in his trial on Wednesday.
Kyle Zientek and Nick Prato were both shot in the October 2015 incident.
They took the stand and both said 20-year-old Steven Jones shot them.
They testified Jones also shot two other people, one of whom died.
Zientek says he tried to run away moments before he was shot twice in the back.
Prato says he went to hold the man who died - Colin Brough - moments after the fatal shooting when he looked up and made eye contact with Jones.
