TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - After a 40-mile bike ride lasting just over fours horus, former Arizona congresswoman Gabby Gifords crossed the finish line at the 2015 El Tour de Tucson.
This year's ride was dedicated to Giffords and her husband Mark Kelly. Both of them started the organization American's For Responsible Solutions which encourages responsible gun ownership.
Kelly and Giffords, wearing bibs numbered one and two, started their 40-mile route in Oro Valley. Giffords road on a modified recumbent bicycle.
"She's been training a lot and she is ready to go," said Kelly about his wife.
Giffords began training for El Tour de Tucson in the spring. Wanting more of a challenge, she chose to ride the 40-mile route this year after riding one of the shorter fun-rides in 2014.
Her goal was to finish El Tour in four hours. After about four-and-a-half hours she crossed the finish line in Armory Park.
Giffords released a statement after the race saying: "Goal achieved! Mark and I just finished a 40-mile ride in El Tour de Tucson. I'm so grateful to all the people who helped me achieve my goal and cheered me on today. And thank you, El Tour! One word to sum it all up? Awesome."
