Ten heat-related deaths confirmed in southern Arizona

Ten heat-related deaths have been confirmed in Pima, Cochise, and Santa Cruz Counties by the Pima County Medical Examiner.

Of the ten heat-related deaths, at least six cases were undocumented border crossers.

All the reported deaths were in May and June.

Gregory Hess, Chief Medical Examiner, says this year's numbers are normal. Heat-related deaths do not make up a majority of the cases his office handles.

The Pima County Sheriff's Department submitted six cases.to the medical examiner, Tohono O'odham Police Department submitted two cases, and both the Tucson and Douglas Police Departments submitted one case.

At least one more case under investigation. Oro Valley police indicate a woman may have died from the heat in her home.
