To say this summer's blockbuster movie season was a bust is an understatement. Movie attendance was down nearly 13 percent, but there were still gems like Wonder Woman, Minions and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2. Jared Cotter decided to take a look back at the highest grossing summer blockbusters through the years, from the 1970s up till the 2000s.

1. Jaws (1975)

Steven Spielberg’s masterpiece has grossed a great white sized $1.14 billion. Fun fact, the "bigger boat" line was totally improvised by actor Roy Schneider.

2. Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980)

It had no problem blasting it's way to nearly $873 million. Chewbacca and company are still laughing all the way to the bank as the Star Wars franchise continues to print money for Disney's Lucasfilm.

3.  Forrest Gump (1994)

The Tom Hanks hit made nearly $700 million. Unlike this year, 1994' had more blockbuster movies than ever. "Big Kahuna's" like Pulp Fiction and The Shawshank Redemption also played alongside Forest Gump at the same time.

4.  Finding Nemo (2003)

This animated movie found box office gold with a $548 million Nemo's sidekick, the forgetful Dory, played by Ellen DeGeneres went on to huge success on dry land and in last year's Finding Dory.
