Social media use activates the chemical dopamine, the same chemical released when you fall in love or are addicted to substances.  “I'm not sure what kind of impact it's going to have on our brain, and our ability to form relationships,” says neuroscientist Larry Young of Emory University.

So, if you're trying to put down the phone, we've got ways you can detox in three days – without losing your mind!

Day One: Cleanse

Delete apps you don't use, unsubscribe to mailing lists, and unfollow people who aren't your real friends. It will make you more aware of what's happening in real life.

Day Two: Set social media rules – and stick to them.

Think TV or video game time with kids. Give yourself certain times of the day to check your phone. Then set rules for times of the day not to check your phone, like during work or at lunch. It will boost productivity and improve your real social life.

Day Three: Disable push-notifications or delete social apps from your phone altogether.

It might seem scary, but not hearing all those beeps, buzzes, and boops from your phone all day can clear your mind and help you focus. As The List’s Teresa Strasser explains, “You may find yourself living that best life everyone keeps talking about.”
