With school starting next week for many students and teachers across Southern Arizona the need for teachers continue.

Tucson Unified School District welcomed 380 new teachers at Santa Rita High school for their new teacher induction.

"It's an awesome challenge and responsibility but it's a great feeling to know that we can pour into the lives of children not only academically but emotionally, socially," said 2nd year teacher Sherri Boge.

With all the new hires there is still a demand for teachers. TUSD still has 129 spots open in order to be a full staff.

A teacher shortage a nationwide issue.

First year mentor, Becky Long says often times, first year teachers feel overwhelmed.

"They feel like they're out in this little tiny boat in this big sea and they just feel lost," says Long.

The district has mentors helping new teachers transition into classrooms to show new teachers that they're supported and not alone.

In turn, getting them to return the following year.
