TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) - Tucson Police say a man killed his stepfather Friday morning.

It happened in the 6000 block of East Hampton Street, near Grant and Wilmot.

Police got the domestic disturbance call a little after nine AM.  They found an elderly man stabbed with a large hunting knife.

43 year old James Leroy Mason waited by an RV as police started their investigation.

Earlier, he surrendered to officers as soon after they arrived.

Sometimes holidays like Thanksgiving add to family stress but police say that does not seem to apply in this case.

Sgt. Pete Dugan says, “From what we understand there has been some arguing in the past with these two so this was just something that just happened today.  It doesn't have anything to do with holidays or people visiting.  These people live here, got into an altercation and someone was stabbed."

Tucson Fire paramedics rushed 72 Year Old Alan Nielsen to Banner University Medical Center.  He died at the hospital.

The fight happened just down the street from Beverly Cox’s yard sale.  She says she did not know there was trouble at the house until police arrived.  But she did know the family.

"They've lived there quite awhile.  I've lived here like 30 years and as they got older they became more reclusive and they were good people.  They're very good people.  I never dreamed that would happen on my street, everybody says that, but bad things happen to good people.  It was sad."

James Mason will be charged first degree murder and domestic violence Checking his record we found domestic violence and DUI charges from 18 years ago and a misdemeanor from August of last year.
