Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey has declared a state of emergency for Mammoth after monsoon rains damaged roadways and affected the small town's potable water system.

The emergency declaration Monday directs $200,000 in emergency funds for immediate emergency protective measures and permanent repairs to protect the more than 1,200 residents in the Pinal County town.

Mammoth received more than three inches of rain during a series of storms from July 26-29.

Authorities say saturation of the ground caused instability in the soil that created fractures within the water system lines requiring frequent and repeated shutdown of the town's water system.

They also say floodwaters covered the roadways with sand and gravel debris, damaged asphalt and caused significant erosion.
