HBO's 2019 miniseries, which hauled in BAFTA, Golden Globe and Emma wins, delves into the political mishaps and callous indifference that magnified the 1986 Soviet nuclear disaster. While dry at times, the emotional impact packs a wallop. Jared Harris and Emily Watson lead the robust ensemble cast. Extras include scene and story breakdowns.
THE HOBBIT AND THE LORD OF THE RINGS 4K TRILOGIES
Peter Jackson's six-film celebration of J.R.R. Tolkien's fiction -- sold in separate trilogies -- crafts an unparalleled and sweeping fantasy epic. "The Lord of the Rings" is by far the stronger slate of films, while "The Hobbit" movies are wildly uneven. Extras include featurettes, interviews and character explorations.
THE IRISHMAN (CRITERION)
Robert De Niro, Al Pacino and Joe Pesci star in director Martin Scorsese's brilliant, if way too long, adaptation of Charles Brandt's book tells the story of a hitman who claims to have been involved in numerous political hot potatoes in the 1960s and 70s, including the Jimmy Hoffa disappearance/assassination. Extras include a tribute booklet, a documentary on Scorsese's filmmaking and a spotlight on the de-aging process.
PERRY MASON: SEASON 1
Matthew Rhys stars in this top-notch reboot of the famed law drama, playing a World War II vet who is thrust into a legal battle when he is hired on to work a child kidnapping case. Juliet Rylance, Tatiana Maslany, John Lithgow and Stephen Root co-star. Cast interviews and featurettes make up the extras.
