TEMPE (AP) The Arizona Cardinals have signed free agent cornerback Antonie Cason to a one year, 2 million dollar contract.
The signing is a homecoming for Cason who was an All-American with the Arizona Wildcats and was named the winner of the 2007 Jim Thorpe Award. In the 2008 NFL Draft, Cason was selected by the Chargers with the 27th overall selection in the first round.
In five seasons with the Chargers, Cason played in all 80 games, but didn't become a starter for the team until 2010. He recorded a total of 12 interceptions during his time with the Chargers, nabbing at least a pair of picks in each season.
With the Cardinals, Cason is expected to be the starting cornerback opposite former-first round pick Patrick Peterson on a pass defense that finished 2012 with the fifth fewest passing yards allowed.
Earlier Friday, Arizona announced it had agreed to terms with former Oakland Raider defensive end Matt Shaughnessy, who started all 16 games last season with Oakland. He had 3.5 sacks along with 42 tackles, 29 solos. The Raiders selected Shaughnessy in the third round of the 2009 draft out of Wisconsin, where he was a teammate of Cardinals outside linebacker O'Brien Schofield.
Arizona has acquired eight free agents this week.
