Sounders win; Red Bulls and Real Salt Lake tie in Desert Diamond Cup

TUCSON (KGUN9-TV)-- Tucson hosted a double-header for the Desert Diamond Cup at Kino Stadium on Wednesday night.
In the first game, Brad Evans and Eddie Johnson led the Seattle Sounders to a 2-0 win against New England Revolution.
Evans buried in a penalty kick in the 27th minute putting points on the board for the Sounders. Seconds before the halftime whistle, Johnson chased the ball up the ride side, cut to the middle and kicked in a left-footed shot for a 2-0 lead.
The Revs were unable to get anything going on the offensive end.
Following the Sounders win over the Revs, soccer fans got an even bigger treat with the New York Red Bulls facing Real Salt Lake.
In the first minute, Real Salt Lake got on the board as Joao Plata ran onto a loose ball and slid it past goalkeeper Santiago Castano. Two minutes later, Plata attempted another goal, which was saved by Castano but rebounded by Cole Grossman who doubled Real Salt Lake’s lead.
A relentless Red Bulls squad put pressure on Real Salt Lake in the 30th minute as defender Jamison Olave hammered in the goal. New York made eight different changes at halftime and tied the game in the 61st minute when Roy Miller found Michael Bustamante, who launched it into the back of the net.
The matchup between New York and Salt Lake ended in a 2-2 tie.
The four teams continue the round robin format with two games on Saturday. Seattle will face Real Salt Lake and New York takes on New England.
