TUCSON (KGUN9-TV) Defending PGA Accenture Match Play champion Hunter Mahan wasn't able to attend media day on Monday in Tucson, as he was still competing in the final round of the Farmers Insurance Open in Torrey Pines, CA.
Mahan, who defeated Rory McIrloy in the 2012 finals, spoke on a teleconference. He said, "I gained some confidence, because I felt like I played against the best players, from Rory McIlroy to Steve Stricker to Matt Kuchar. I felt like I went head-to-head with the game's best and I was able to beat the game's best.
I know within myself and within my game, I have the potential to be a great player and to win tournaments and to win majors, and mabye be the best player in the world, be the No. 1 player in the world, and that's kind of what it showed me."
I know I can always go back to that and know that I beat the best and it just gives me confidence in my own ability and I have that within me to compete against anybody."
PGA Accenture Match Play will be at the Golf Club at Dove Mountain from February 18th to the 24th.
