It's arguably the worst road within the City of Tucson -- Broadway from Camino Seco to Houghton.

The Tucson Department of Transportation has good news for Eastside drivers: construction begins next Monday to improve the roadway.

Drivers can expect a smoother ride within 16 months from the start date of Sept. 17, according to TDOT engineering project manager, Greg Orsini.

The Broadway Improvement Project covers approximately two miles from Camino Seco to Houghton Road and is part of the voter-approved Regional Transportation Authority (RTA) plan.

The proposed improvements include:

- Widen Broadway to four lanes, two lanes in each direction.

- Curbed, landscaped median on Broadway and a shoulder curb

- Add 5-foot bike lanes and 6-foot sidewalks in each direction

The city will be water harvesting during construction with basins in the median and on the sidewalks, Orsini said.
