PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. (AP) - Michael Thompson had one of only five rounds under par Sunday to win his first PGA Tour event at the Honda Classic.
Thompson seized control with a 50-foot eagle putt on the third hole. He stayed in control with superb par saves early on the back nine at PGA National. He made birdie from the bunker on the last hole for a 1-under 69 and a two-shot victory over Geoff Ogilvy.
The 27-year-old Thompson already is in the Masters from being a runner-up at the U.S. Open.
Ogilvy birdied two of his last three holes for a 69 to finish second, which moves him into the top 50 and gets him into the World Golf Championship next week at Doral.
Tiger Woods closed with a 74 and was tied for 37th.
