SAN LUIS, Ariz. (KGUN9-TV) - A man was taken into custody Thursday by Customs and Border Protection officers for attempting to smuggle $36,000 worth of heroin into the United States.
CBP officers referred 19-year-old Luis Humberto Hernandez-Romero for additional inspection of his Nissan Sedan, according to Rob Daniels with the Department of Homeland Security. During the inspection, a narcotics detection canine alerted to the presence of drugs inside the vehicle.
Following the canine's alert, officers found more than two and a half pounds of heroin inside Hernandez-Romero's sneakers, Daniels said.
CBP officials seized the vehicle and the drugs, and Hernandez-Romero was turned over to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement's Homeland Security Investigations.
