Aurora, CO (KGUN9-TV/AP) - Police in Aurora, Colorado say at least 12 people are dead, and nearly 58 more are wounded, after a shooting spree at a movie theater.
Police say a gunman in a gas mask barged into a crowded theater during a midnight premiere of the thrid installment of the Batman trilogy, "Dark Knight Rises", hurled a gas canister, and then opened fire. Witnesses say when the gas began to spread, some moviegoers thought it was a stunt that was part of the movie.
Police have arrested 24-year-old James Holmes. The FBI says there is no indication the incident is tied to any terrorist groups.
Speaking from Florida, President Barack Obama says he is "shocked and saddened" by attack. He is urging the nation to "come together as one American family." Homeland Security Secretary Janet Napolitano says she's instructed her department to provide any necessary support for the investigation.
Officials say this is the worst mass shooting in Colorado since the Columbine High School massacre on April 20, 1999, which happened just a few miles away.
